They Call Her Misty
Tonya Watson
It’s no secret that Indianapolis, Indiana is not the fashion capital of the United States. However, little by little, designer by designer, we are making strides to put our city on the map in the fashion industry. One of the designers making a name for herself is Misty Dodson.
Misty has a unique style of design that offers more than one look. One design may show the softer side of a woman whereas another may show the sexy side and then a third shows the sophisticated side. Misty is a designer who knows that women are not one dimensional and that we enjoy displaying all of those aspects of our personalities.
Recently, I had an opportunity to work with her in a Candy Productions event and jumped at the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her and her background. Check it out!
Tonya:
If you had to describe your designs in three words, what would they be and why?
Misty:
Sexy, Edgy and Practical. My designs are for women who are comfortable and confident with their body and like to show it. My garments are form fitting, low cut and accent the body. I love to throw a little “edginess” into almost all my pieces. I want to give just a hint of an edge without taking away from the practically of the garment so that the versatility of each piece can be worn anywhere.
Tonya: When did you first know that designing was more than just a hobby and something that you wanted to do as a career?
Misty:
I first knew that designing was more than a hobby when finding myself ecstatic after creating a beautiful work of art from nothing. I enrolled in the Art Institute of Indianapolis to obtain my BFA in fashion design because of my passion for the creativity and challenges. Honestly, I don’t know if I would be as successful today without the knowledge I have obtained from being in school.
Tonya: When you create your designs, do you sketch or just begin to sew?
Misty:
Both. It depends on my mood and my idea. For me it is like sculpting, I am taking away the extra pieces to find my design. Other times, I have a clear idea of what I want and like to sketch it.
Tonya: It's common knowledge that fashion goes in cycles. Everything old is new again or will be soon enough. What retro styles are you glad resurfaced and which ones are you just over?
Misty:
I love the high waist look in pants, shorts and skirts. It gives women more flattering waistlines. I have never really cared for Bell Bottoms.
Tonya:
Tell me, what separates you from other up and coming designers and where you see your career 5 years from now.
Misty:
I really can not say what separates me from other designers because I do not consider myself as competing against another designer. I do this because I enjoy it. I do this hoping that others will like my creations. I feel a sense of accomplishment after I finish a piece and that is why I do this. In 5 years, I hope I am living the fashion dream of becoming a well-known and respected fashion designer.
Well, it appears that Misty has put her game plan in motion and we wish her the best of luck in
her fashion design career.
Signing off,
Tonya Watson
